BF Downtime

Bright Future Downtime

The horrors of a more structured life. Different characters have different commitments thanks to their backgrounds, this dramatically effects their available downtime. And in a more advanced age, there’s a lot more opportunities for how to spend your down time.

Down Time Actions

Self Sufficient

You can live a squalid life style and gain no spending money in urban environments. In rural environments you can maintain a squalid life style and earn a squalid salary performing odd jobs for locals.

Practice a Profession

Not all professions can be practiced in down time, however some will let you pull extra hours to earn a few extra slips. Use your Salary and gain the daily cost of living for your salary range per day of downtime spent.

Crafting

Crafting (1 day is 100 + 50 * [Intelligence Mod + Proficiency bonus if you’re using tools your proficient in] slips worth of effort)

Taming an Animal

Spend time taming an animal. (60 days to tame an animal, 40 days to teach it a trick. Half the needed days if your proficient in animal handling). You can spend $100 a day for professional help, doubling the effort for the day.

Strengthening Bonds

Spend time strengthening a bond. Make a Charisma DC 10, gain advantage if you spend the bond’s daily spending money worth of slips for the day.
Critical Success: gain 1 bond strength, reset bond growth.
Success: gain a tick in bond growth. Once you hit 5 bond growth, reset bond growth and gain 1 bond strength.
Failure: reduce bond growth by one.
Critical Failure: the bond loses 1 strength and reset bond growth.

Training

Training costs $100 a day for supplies and other learning material.

  • Spend time training a weapon, vehicle, or tool (30 days to gain proficiency)
  • Spend time training a skill (50 days to gain skill proficiency)
  • Spend time training with Armor or Shields (100 days to gain armor or shield proficiency, require previous armor level first)
  • Spend time training a feat (200 days to gain a feat)

Intense Training

Sometimes you need to throw caution and personal safety to the wind in order to train yourself in time to meet a challenge. Intense training allows you to effectively have two days of downtime for every single day of down time, if your body can keep up with it. Resting on days of intense training does not restore health, hit dice, or spells. In the middle of every day of intense training you gain a level of exhaustion, if you can eat and sleep properly this goes away every day. However you can only endure intense training for your constitution modifier worth of days before gaining an addition level of exhaustion. Characters that don’t need to sleep and those who only need to meditate for 4 hours can last an additional day before gaining this additional level of exhaustion.

Days until additional Exhaustion: 1 (base) + Constitution Mod + 1 (if race doesn’t sleep or meditates)
Additional Exhaustion in 0 days: Your character lacks the fortitude to go through intense training.
Bonds Enhancing Intensive Training: As long as the bond can keep up with you, they can help train you, however it decreases the bond strength by three, due to the intensity and physical strain they’re putting themselves under.

Example:
A human wizard with a constitution score of 10, will be able to go through intense training for a single day, gaining an additional point of exhaustion at the end of the first day.
An elven wizard with a constitution score of 10, will be able to go through intense training for two days, gaining an additional point of exhaustion at the end of the second day.
A level 20 Wood Elf barbarian with a constitution score of 24, will be able to go through intense training for nine days, gaining an additional point of exhaustion at the end of the ninth day.

As Intense Training is effectively gives you an extra downtime day, you can spend half the day working towards one goal, and the other half of the day spent training in another area. Intense training is restricted just to training, it can not be used for crafting, taming, self-sufficiency, practicing a profession, or strengthening bonds.

During Intense training you have no time to shop, and barely enough time to eat and rest. You need to double the cost of living for those days as you’re relying heavily on the convenience of gold and extra food to stay fed, in order to get the extra time you need to effectively double your training.

Intelligence Bonus

Your intelligence mod will effect the rate at which new skills are acquired and item proficiency is gained. This does interact with intense training. Since intense training effectively turns one downtime day into two downtime days, you can learn extremely fast at the risk of burning yourself out. Also once a person gains a level of exhaustion they usually stop training to recover, this will break the days of continual training.
Intelligence Modifier:
(- 1): The first day of continuous downtime spent training doesn’t count towards total training, spending a single day training provides no progress.
(+ 0): Every day of downtime training is exactly one day of training.
(+ 1): Every 4 downtime days of straight training results in an extra day worth of training.
(+ 2): Every 3 downtime days of straight training results in an extra day worth of training.
(+ 3): Every 2 downtime days of straight training results in an extra day worth of training.
(+ 4): Every downtime day of training results in an extra day worth of training.

Example:
Spending 9 downtime days straight training results in the following days worth of training.
Intelligence Modifier:
(- 1) 8 days of training.
(+ 0) 9 days of training.
(+ 1) 11 days of training.
(+ 2) 12 days of training.
(+ 3) 13 days of training.
(+ 4) 18 days of training.
