Setting Overview

Welcome to the Material Plane, it may look a little different from the last time you visited. The world’s undergone a bit of a revision, a set of eight new gods to replace the missing old ones, the landscape has been remolded by Cernos, and Years have gotten a lot shorter. There’s also our mortal attempts to make the world a better place, and with magic seemingly being drained from the world we’ve had to turn to technology. The mortal mind has managed some great feats of science and engineering, we’ve replaced limbs with Warforged inspired Automail, can send messages nearly instantaneously with The Wire, reach other cities in hours instead of days with the Locomotive, and even produce basic pharmaceuticals to fight illness and disease.

But problems continue to persist in society, as people have moved from the country side to the city, they’ve focused on their lives instead of building communities. The wealthy are the only ones who can afford the modern marvels, most city dwellers won’t see enough money in their life time to dream of purchasing automail, they’ll ride a train once a year, and if they’re lucky they’ll have the money to purchase drugs when they actually need them instead of becoming an indebted servant to the Drug Barons. So very few venture out of the cities, and fewer still will take on the mantle of Adventurer.

Most folks see Adventurers as those without options, they’re vagabonds and most are linked with Banditry. Nobles know that if somethings needs to get done, a few spare coins will usually satisfy an adventurers coin purse and solve your problems. If anything happens to go wrong, you can always just throw the adventuring party to the wolves, society will blame the adventurers for being fools and not the nobility for hiring them. But the beautiful silver lining is that no one wants to go out adventuring, leaving the world fresh and perfect for exploring. It’s still dangerous, monsters have reclaimed a lot of the wilds and if things go wrong no one will find your body for years to come, but the lost magic relics and old world items are enough to go from broke to wealthy in a few short years.
