Age of Orion
Vehicle Engines
Rarity
- Common: Can be found almost everywhere
- Uncommon: A few locations will usually have it, usually based on need or usage.
- Rare: Usually limited to specific locations or use is uncommon.
- Legendary: Likely only a hand full of these exist.
Engine Usages
Vehicle Engines are able to be using in both Airships and Ground Vehicles. Originally designed for airships, the engines have turned more ground focused after the rise of Orion.
Air Maneuverability Scale
Airship specific:
Degree of turns is the amount of a turn allowed by the vehicle in a single turn.
- Clumsy: Barely maneuverable. [45 degree turns]
- Poor: Flies like a large bird. [90 degree turns]
- Average: Fly as adroitly as a small bird. [135 degree turns]
- Good: Very agile in air (Housefly or hummingbird). [180 degree turns]
- Perfect: Moves in the air the same as we move on the ground. [360 degree turns]
Super-Heavy Class Engines
Airships come in four variety of classes, Light (fighter craft), Medium (small closed cabin craft), Heavy (large closed cabin craft), and Super-Heavy (Flying bases). The Super-Heavy class requires their own type of engine as the Airship design tends to change drastically.
Residuum Super-Heavy Class Engines
OX-003 Levitation Drive
Cost: 20,000 gold
Rarity: Legendary (National Military)
AC: + 0
Dexterity Save: + 0
Speed: + 80
Acceleration: 20
Maneuver: + 4 [Max Perfect]
Fuel Usage: 32 oz of Residuum per Hour
Special: Every extra ton of weight over it’s two hundred and fifty (250) ton weight limit burns an extra oz of residuum fuel per hour. It can support up to an extra 64 tons before the extra weight effects it’s speed.
Details: The Ox was the workforce behind Stahlwachts flying fortresses, supporting hundreds of tons of weight on a single engine. While not the fastest, the spell woven into them grants the airship near perfect control even when dealing with the larger Super-Heavy class airships.
Non-Residuum Airship Engines
Maneuver Max: Craft can not have a Maneuver score above the Max value. For example, if there are two engines, use the lowest maximum, so a Perfect and a Poor results in Poor.
Whale Oil Engines
Run on Whale Oil, they burn a lot of fuel, but Whale Oil costs way less per oz than Residuum. Whale oil burns rather clean, but unlike Residuum engines, Whale Oil Engines require a five minute start up period to heat their internal boiler.
Prices for Whale Oil can be found on the Equipment page.
Quigley 1005 Oil Engine (First made in 1005 CE)
Cost: 200 gold
Rarity: Uncommon (Mechanic)
AC: + 0
Dexterity Save: + 0
Speed: + 10
Acceleration: 10
Maneuver: + 0 [Max Clumsy]
Fuel Usage: 5 oz of Whale Oil per Hour
Special: Slow Start: 5 minute start up time. Runs Hot: can’t run for longer than 6 hours unless cooled.
Details: The first Whale Oil engine uses steam power to mechanically power planes. Runs into overheating problems, which was later fixed by proper air cooling in later models. Works fairly well for surface vehicles but lacks the power to be used in most aircraft.
Quigley 1006 Oil Engine (First made in 1006 CE)
Cost: 620 gold
Rarity: Rare (Mechanic)
AC: + 1
Dexterity Save: + 1
Speed: + 20
Acceleration: 10
Maneuver: + 1 [Max Poor]
Fuel Usage: 6 oz of Whale Oil per Hour
Special: Slow Start: 5 minute start up time.
Details: With advancements in mechanical understanding and the usage of air cooling for the engine it was the first engine that could run nearly indefinitely. This is the first whale oil engine that the Quigley family used for air travel, it came with it’s own share of problems and most of them were still bought for ground vehicles.
Quigley 1007 Oil Engine (First made in 1007 CE)
Cost: 1180 gold
Rarity: Rare (Mechanic)
AC: + 1
Dexterity Save: + 1
Speed: + 40
Acceleration: 20
Maneuver: + 1 [Max Poor]
Fuel Usage: 8 oz of Whale Oil per Hour
Special: Slow Start: 5 minute start up time.
Details: The hopeful workhorse of the Quigley family air travel business, burning more fuel but pushing far more mechanical power. Using a dual boiler design, the 1007 model can push enough power to get even larger airships flying on whale oil.
Residuum Vehicle Engines
All Residuum Engines weigh 25 lbs.
Maneuver Max: Craft can not have a Maneuver score above the Max value. For example, if there are two engines, use the lowest maximum, so a Perfect and a Poor results in Poor.
Residuum Engines are more powerful than Whale Oil Engines, however the fuel to run them has become so rare they they’ve stopped producing the engines. Collectors and old adventurers are the primary owners now.
